Pundit Paul Merson believes Anthony Martial should not be playing for Man United.
Manchester United Football Club have certainly made progress under Erik ten Hag, though the Old Trafford club still have a long way to go.
In terms of goalscoring, something has to change. Wout Weghorst isn’t good enough. He will not be here next season.
The club will likely bring in an elite level striker when the window opens, assuming they have the money available. Then, a decision has to be made on Anthony Martial.
The Frenchman has been consistently injured this term, making it tough for Ten Hag to trust him. Now that he’s back in the fold, he’s hardly lighting it up. He was pretty poor against Brighton and in truth, he never looked like scoring.
Now, one pundit, in the form of Paul Merson, has claimed that the 27-year-old ‘shouldn’t be playing’ for United, with Merse expecting changes to the front three this summer.
Check out what Paul Merson had to say in full here:
“Manchester United’s current front three is Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Antony, but I think there will be changes this summer, 1 million percent.” Merson said in his SportsKeeda column.
“They are 16 points behind Manchester City at the moment and the same team next season will not get anywhere close to the Premier League title. They need a Harry Kane up front. Anthony Martial – seriously? He shouldn’t be playing for Manchester United, sorry.”
Well, we know it’s not going to be Antony who is leaving, as he’s only just got here and he definitely makes United play better. Marcus Rashford is absolutely not going anywhere either, with United keen to tie the Englishman down to a new deal.
That makes Martial expendable. He is not going to be happy being resigned to the bench next season when a new forward comes in. Will United look to move away from the Frenchman permanently as I doubt he’ll want to stay…?
The problem there is that no club will be willing to pay the hefty pay-packet that Martial currently takes home. With that in mind, I reckon we could see a loan for the ex-AS Monaco man, during which United will likely be forced into paying a hefty chunk of those wages.
I guess we’ll just have to see how it plays out.
