Anthony Martial is the latest player to face the wrath of Erik ten Hag, with the Frenchman exiled from first-team training.
Erik ten Hag does not mess around. He isn’t afraid of reminding his players who the real boss is. Manchester United had no choice but to let Jadon Sancho go in January as a result of his banishment from the first-team.
Now, another player has fallen into Ten Hag’s bad books; Anthony Martial.
We haven’t seen the Frenchman in quite some time now. Over a month in fact, with the ex-AS Monaco striker initially missing through an illness.
Now, the Daily Mail reports that the United star has been told to train alone and work on his fitness, before the gaffer will consider picking him again for the first-team.
Martial has apparently not trained with his teammates since picking up a sickness bug in early-December, with Ten hag remaining tight-lipped on the situation since that point.
It’s believed that Martial still isn’t match fit, which is a damning indictment on the player. It is thought that Ten Hag’s decision to force Martial to train alone is not a disciplinary matter, but it does reflect his belief for players who are lacking in match fitness.
The fact that Martial is deemed not fit enough to work with the core group says a lot about the player. Ten Hag will not settle for this lacklustre attitude, which is summed up by the fact that Martial himself is happy to stay at United, remaining out of the fold, collecting his wages.
You’d think that any player of genuine quality would want to leave the club and go out and prove his worth away on loan. That doesn’t seem to be the case here.
The sooner he’s gone, the better.
