Anthony Martial will not be heading to the World Cup with France.
Just a couple of hours ago, we covered a claim from L’Equipe which suggested that Anthony Martial was in contention for a late World Cup call-up.
The Frenchman was being considered, as Didier Deschamps pondered his options in the wake of a Karim Benzema injury.
Having only just returned from injury himself, United probably would have preferred it if Martial wasn’t in contention to head off to Qatar.
Well, L’Equipe have provided us another update – which is good news for United… The star will not be heading to the World Cup. Instead, France will play with a 25-man squad rather than bringing someone else in.
Deschamps has decided not to replace Benzema, meaning Martial, although he’ll probably be feeling sad from a personal standpoint, will remain in Manchester.
This does present Martial with an excellent opportunity to work hard at Carrington and get back to 100% fitness ahead of the return of domestic football in late-December.
After such a stop-start campaign, this is absolutely the best situation for Martial. The worst thing for United (and the player), would be for Martial to go to Qatar, pick up another injury and not only end his World Cup early, but also mean he’ll be struggling for fitness upon the resumption of club football.
If you’ve seen Martial play under Ten Hag this term, you have every reason to be excited. He absolutely looks perfect for this system and when fully fit and firing I genuinely believe he’ll have a huge part to play.
