Antonio Conte has already given the go-ahead to manage Man United, assuming they want him.
Manchester United may well be in the hunt for a new manager in the not too distant future. You do get the feeling that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s days are numbered.
The question is, who would the Red Devils go out there and hire? Well, Antonio Conte is the overwhelming favourite at this point in time – presumably because he’s the most readily available given the stage in the season which we’re at.
Well, the latest update on the Conte to United rumour comes from Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness. They go big, claiming that the Italian manager has given his acceptance, to the job. Apparently, the ‘yes’ has ‘already arrived’.
GdS also add that the Premier League has ‘always fascinated’ Conte, with the 52-year-old guiding Chelsea to a Premier League crown a few years ago.
For any manager worth their salt, the United job has to be of some interest. Conte is one of the best in the business at what he does, although the ideologies and tactics between both parties are hardly the perfect fit…
United’s DNA is built on the foundations of youth and attacking football. Conte, on the other hand, likes to sit back with five defenders and try to hit teams on the break. It would mean a genuine change in identity for the club, as the manager isn’t going to change something that has worked so successfully for him over a number of years.
You do get the impression that Conte is hanging on for as long as possible to see whether the Old Trafford hot-seat does become available. Personally, though, I’m still not sure this would be the correct hire…
