Man United winger Antony came in for some stick after doing the ‘I can’t hear you’ celebration to Coventry players at full-time on Sunday. Now, he’s explained his thought process.
Manchester United progressed into the FA Cup final by the skin of their teeth last time out. Let’s be honest, it was a poor performance as soon as the first goal was conceded.
In the end, it took a favourable offside decision and a nervy penalty shootout for the Old Trafford club to book another date with Manchester City in a Wembley showpiece match.
After the game, Antony copped for plenty of social media stick after a picture of the Brazilian cupping his ears at the Coventry players started doing the rounds. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the action at the time. I’m still not keen on it now.
However, Antony has now come out and explained his decision to taunt the Coventry players, admitting he was defending the club after the Sky Blues were treating United fans in a ‘not nice’ manner.
Check out what Antony had to say in full here:
“Coventry proved why they reached the semi-final. We seeked this spot in the final for our fans and we achieved”.
“The way our fans were treated by their player was not nice and I, in the heat of the moment, I’ve reacted to the provocations in a natural defense of my club”. Antony told media, including Fabrizio Romano.
Look. I get it. Tensions were high. Antony is a very passionate footballer who always wears his heart on his sleeve and he’ll know better than anyone that this was a mistake in the heat of the moment.
He’ll probably always look back at it as a mistake, which is undoubtedly true. However, it’s done now. It didn’t hurt anyone too badly, so we should just all move on and allow him to focus solely on his football.
If we’re being brutally honest, we need to see more production out of Antony sooner rather than later. The performances have been underwhelming, particularly this season. I know he’s had some off-field drama to deal with but we still need to see the Brazilian finish out the season strongly. If he doesn’t, I genuinely fear his head could be on the chopping block in the coming months…
