Diogo Dalot is being targeted for a January move, by Jose Mourinho and AS Roma…
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United squad is slowly starting to take shape. The Baby Faced Assassin was seemingly keen on adding a new right-back to the squad this summer, with the likes of Kieran Trippier linked with an Old Trafford switch.
In the end, no right-back was added with United placing faith in Diogo Dalot to fill that back-up job. However, we’ve barely seen the Portugal international play this term.
Now, according to Calciomercato, one club in particular are showing some January transfer interest in the 22-year-old United first-teamer, who continues to struggle for minutes here in Manchester…
That side? AS Roma, managed by none other than Jose Mourinho. As Calciomercato state, the self-proclaimed Special One has always been a big fan of Dalot:
“Given his age, he’s the best right-back around and will have a great future here with us at Manchester United.” Mourinho said when he signed Dalot for the Reds a few years ago.
Given Dalot’s lack of minutes, United could look to cash in while the interest is there. However, it would mean the Reds would have to go out there and sign a replacement. Whether or not they can revisit a more for Trippier remains to be seen at this point.
As for Dalot, he wants to be playing regularly once again, particularly with the Qatar World Cup just on the horizon. A move to AS Roma for the Portugal international does seem like a good fit, too.
He’d be playing in a league he’s familiar with (went on loan in the Serie A last term), for a manager who seems to trust him. CM state that Dalot would be ‘more than an alternative’ for the 26-year-old Rick Karsdorp for Roma, meaning the United full-back would be given a big opportunity at starting games with regularity.
I can see this deal happening if United can identify and sign a replacement, which is far easier said than done. It’s also worth noting a lot can change in football within a few months. Say Aaron Wan-Bissaka gets injured, Dalot steps in and does well, then there’d be no reason for him to leave, so let’s wait and see…
