Manchester United have remained firm on their valuation so far, though AS Roma just keep on coming for Chris Smalling.

The Englishman spent a season on loan in the Italian capital last term, greatly impressing in the Serie A. Now, the club are ready to throw ‘everything’ at it to sign the 31-time capped England international this summer.

That’s according to Il Tempo‘s Monday print edition, translated via Sport Witness. The Italian media outlet actually put a fee on it, too, with Roma wanting to complete a deal for around £15m (€16-17m).

Il Tempo actually dedicates a full-page spread to Smalling in their paper, which shows just how much they believe their sources in regards to a Roma move for the centre-half.

The new AS Roma owner, Dan Friedkin, believes signing Smalling permanently is the right move at this point, giving their CEO, Guido Fienga, the go-ahead to get this deal done.

Why an AS Roma move for Chris Smalling makes sense

First and foremost, Smalling is thirty years old. His best years are probably behind him, while getting £15m for a player of that age, in this current climate, is excellent business.

The question is, how hard will Edward Woodward push to get even more money for Smalling? No doubt he’ll be looking to eek every single penny out of Roma. I just hope he doesn’t push them over the line…

At this stage, the last thing United want is Smalling back at United. He’d be behind Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly in the pecking order. Plus, I’d also believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to give minutes to Axel Tuanzebe and possibly even Teden Mengi.

Simply put, it feels like Smalling’s time in Manchester is over. Solskjaer is looking to go in a different direction and it makes sense for all involved to move away from him this summer.
