Atletico Madrid defender keen on a move to Manchester United: report

During the January transfer window, Manchester United were busy trimming their squad down. Jose Mourinho chose to let go of both Memphis Depay and Morgan Schneiderlin without bringing in a replacement for either. Now, though, plans will have likely begun for the upcoming summer transfer period.

According to the Manchester Evening News, one man who’d be interested in a move to Manchester United Football Club is Jose Gimenez of Atletico Madrid.

The 22-year-old is a centre-half from Uruguay who has been with the Spanish giants since 2013. However, he has only started 16 games across all competitions, with his current boss favouring both Diego Godin and Stefan Savic in that area of the field.

With that in mind, you could definitely understand his desire to move elsewhere. The report from the MEN also states that Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his defensive options, and Gimenez could definitely interest the self-proclaimed Special One in my opinion.

Finally, the MEN add that the player has a £56million release clause in his current deal, but he only has just over twelve months left to run. That means that come January of 2018, he’d be allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement for another club; meaning Atletico wouldn’t get a transfer fee. So, they’ll probably be looking to shift him on during this coming summer in order to get some money for the centre-back.
