Manchester United took part in a forgettable game on Wednesday night at Old Trafford. Sure, the Red Devils booked their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round – though they would have expected better…
It was a memorable evening for one particular squad member, though… Axel Tuanzebe was not only handed a start against Rochdale, the town where he began his footballing career. He was also given the honour of wearing the captain’s armband.
After captaining the club at every youth level, it felt fitting that the 21-year-old would get the privilege at first-team level – and it was against such a fitting opponent, too.
Anyway, shortly after the game finished, Tuanzebe took to Instagram to send a classy message to the fans, as he reacted to being named United captain for the first time.
It really is the stuff of dreams, and no doubt this is an incredible moment for his whole family. It was unexpected, but it’s more than fair to say the decision was justified.
Tuanzebe didn’t put a foot wrong all game. In fact, he was one of just a few players who came away from the Theatre of Dreams in a positive light yesterday evening.
For me, he’s really pushing Victor Lindelof hard for that starting role in the Premier League games. With one or two more convincing performances coupled with a slip-up from the Ice Man, who knows, perhaps we could see a changing of the guard…
