Manchester United fans could have been given the clearest indication yet that Frenkie de Jong could be on the way…
As Manchester United gear up for what feels like their most important transfer window over the last decade, the Old Trafford club are being linked with every name under the sun.
The latest player to join that list is Frenkie de Jong. Over the last week or so, rumours suggesting the Dutchman could switch FC Barcelona for Manchester have undoubtedly ramped up. We’ve been following that story here.
In terms of the latest information, Deportes Cuatro provided us all with an intriguing update on Thursday. In their title, they state that current Barca manager, Xavi, ‘endorses’ the sale of the player as he wants to renew the midfield at the Camp Nou club.
As you get into the main body of the article, Deportes Cuatro make a huge claim. They state that the 25-year-old ‘will be a Manchester United player’ in the coming weeks.
On top of that, they cite information from Gerard Romero claiming that Barca has ‘given the order’ to let the Dutchman move on during the upcoming transfer window.
With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic leaving, United are looking seriously light in the middle of the park. At least one and ideally two new players must be signed in that area of the pitch. I’d like to see the club place some trust in James Garner, though that leaves room for one more.
De Jong would seamlessly slot straight into our starting line-up. While his prior relationship with Erik ten Hag from their time together at Ajax definitely speeds up the ease with which the midfielder would be able to adapt and adjust to life in Manchester.
The problem for United is that they will not be the only party interested in signing De Jong. Beating out Champions League clubs for his signature may well prove tough, but I like the fact that the Reds aren’t hanging around and they’re already trying to get transfers done.
