For Manchester United, the upcoming summer is huge. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been given the job permanently, now, the club need to back him financially.
While players must be signed, there’s also the possibility of a real squad overhaul with several players ageing while others have winding down contracts. Amongst those with expiring deals is Juan Mata.
Now, according to The Sun, it is being reported that FC Barcelona are targeting the attacking midfielder on a free transfer.
Mata, 30, is now free to talk to any side outside of England about the possibility of agreeing a pre-contract, and Barcelona have already opened talks with the Spaniard’s representatives about a potential move to Catalonia.
Apparently, United have only offered Mata a one-year deal, while he is seeking a two-year contract at this stage in his career.
I love Mata, he’s a fantastic person and a brilliant player, but sometimes, situations don’t work out. I think it’s fair to say that Mata has had some great moments without really showing any consistency, perhaps a move back home would make sense for all involved, although it would be disappointing to lose him on a free transfer.
