FC Barcelona are targeting a move to sign Arnau Puigmal from Manchester United in January.
Manchester United have done their fair share of hoovering up the best young talent Spain has to offer recently, with Marc Jurado and Alvaro Fernandez arriving from Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.
Now, it looks as though the Catalonian outfit are looking to take their revenge with a move for Arnau Puigmal.
The story comes from Sport, who state that Barca are looking to strengthen their youth team and are closely following Puigmal.
Apparently, the Nou Camp side are trying to sign the ‘most outstanding’ player in United’s youth side, whose contract expires next summer.
What’s interesting is that Barca have no intention of waiting until then. In fact, they’re looking to negotiate with United now, in order to seal Puigmal’s arrival in January.
Puigmal’s versatility is his biggest selling point, while the player himself would understandably ‘welcome’ a return to his homeland. He’s now ready to ‘take a step forward’ in his football career, while a first-team chance looks pretty far away at Old Trafford.
So what happens now?
Well, the ball is in Puigmal’s court. I’d imagine United are fully intending on signing the Spaniard down to a new contract. However, if he chooses to decline that deal, he’d be free to talk to clubs about signing a pre-contract for next season.
As it has already been stated, Barca don’t want to wait that long, so they’ll be in contact with United beforehand about coming to some sort of arrangement in regards to the young man.
In an ideal world, we’d love to keep Puigmal here. However, if he is determined to leave, you’d imagine it’d be in United’s best interests to let him leave in the mid-season window. What do you reckon?
