Manchester United Football Club made it into the top four. Champions League football will be on display at Old Trafford next season. Our 2-0 victory against Leicester City could be about to become even more significant, too. Apparently, it gives us a lift pursuit of a possible Ben Chilwell transfer.
The story comes from The Sun, who in their title, claim that United have been handed a transfer boost in pursuit of the 23-year-old. Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are also credited with an interest in the left-back.
Apparently, after Leicester failed to seal Champions League qualification, they’re no in danger of losing Chilwell this summer.
The Foxes hoped that the offer of ‘top-level’ European football would convince Chilwell to stay. However, both United and Chelsea made the cut instead, leaving the Englishman with a decision to make.
There would be more money on the table if Chilwell did decide to make the jump, though that’s not the only factor in making his mind up. He’s also looking to cement his place as England’s first-choice left-back.
No fee is mentioned by The Sun, though it’s worth noting that Chilwell would be a huge upgrade on what we already have over on that left-hand side of defence.
Is a Chilwell transfer worth it, though?
It’s a tough one. Luke Shaw was playing some lovely football before picking up that season-ending ankle injury… Can he get back to that level? And maintain it for a full season? I’d like to think so, but I have doubts.
Chilwell wouldn’t be cheap. At a guess, Leicester would probably be looking at £50million+ as a bare minimum to let him leave. Would those funds be better spent elsewhere given the current state of the squad? Probably.
For what it’s worth, we still think he’ll end up at Chelsea or Manchester City. I’d definitely take it if Chilwell did make the move to Old Trafford. I just feel other areas need to be prioritised.
