Manchester United slumped to a poor 0-0 away draw at Cambridge United last night, as the League Two minnows forced a huge payday for themselves in the form of a replay at Old Trafford. After the game, Louis van Gaal made some bizarre comments, and moved the blame away from his players.
“Every aspect of the match is against us – the pitch, the referee. Everything that you can think about this is against you,” Van Gaal said.
“The opponents also always give a lot more than normal. Also the fans of course, but that is nice I think and the atmosphere here was fantastic.”
This is poor form from the Dutchman. Whatever side he put out, Manchester United should be destroying teams like Cambridge in any condition. No excuses should be made here, and at the end of the day the team looked out of ideas despite having the majority of the ball.
The pitch was actually pretty decent for a League Two side, and although the referee did make a few bad decisions, that shouldn’t be regarded as a defining factor.
