Manchester United were trying to sign Chelsea winger Willian over the summer, but the 30-year-old Brazilian rejected the chance to reunite with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Now, all hope regarding potentially signing the right-winger in future seems to be lost, with Chelsea set to tie him down to a new two-year contract, according to The Metro.
Right-wing has been a real problem area for United over the last few years, with our best option out there being Juan Mata… I like the former Valencia man, but he’s far better through the middle as he just doesn’t have the pace to play out wide effectively.
Willian would have fitted in perfectly. He’s worked with Mourinho before and the pair know each other’s style inside out. He could have made an impact from day-one, as Willian would have immediately been our first-choice in that area of the field.
For the time being, it looks as though Mourinho is going to have to persist with Mata until at least January. No doubt it’ll cost us a game or two over the next few months, but that’s the hand we’ve been dealt and we’ll just have to get behind everyone, because they’re going to need the support.
