Ahead of the league clash away to Fulham tomorrow evening, the boss gave us the team news and revealed that Jonny Evans is due to return to training today, but Ashley Young is still unavailable for selection due to a knee problem he picked up int he game against Liverpool last month.
It was expected that Ashley Young would miss out as he didn’t feature in the latest England team, and at this stage of the season having an almost fully fit squad is vital, especially with us still in with a chance for all three major trophies.
“We’re quite healthy in terms of the players available” Sir Alex said. “Ashley Young’s the one that’s still not available. Hopefully Jonny trains today, which would give us another defender. That’s good news. I’ll make one or two changes tomorrow. Rio Ferdinand will play. Definitely.”
Fergie has managed the squad excellently over recent weeks, giving Ferdinand a rest when needed, and giving a break to those who may feature for England on Wednesday, with the best example being Tom Cleverley.
Sir Alex then went on to praise the defensive performance in the second half against Southampton, in a game which shown how little the margins between winning and losing are.
“Wednesday was important for us and we really dug in defensively. We blocked shots and cleared headers. I was impressed with that but we were a bit lucky to win the game. The first half, we could have been five up at half-time, but a one-goal lead isn’t enough.”
