Brandon Williams’ loan move to Saints could be off due to Reds’ demands: report

Brandon Williams’ proposed loan move to Southampton may no longer be happening…

Manchester United’s jam-packed squad means there are simply not enough minutes in the season for everyone to remain happy. Inevitably, it means some first-teamers will have to depart either permanently or on loan.

After a drastic reduction in minutes last term, Brandon Williams has been earmarked as someone who could benefit from a short-term deal elsewhere. It seemed as though the Englishman would head to Southampton, where the left-back would’ve been the ideal replacement for Ryan Bertrand.

However, according to talkSPORT, that move for the 20-year-old could now be off the table due to United’s high financial demands.

Apparently, United’s demands mean that Southampton would have to make Williams their highest-paid player, which is something they’re currently unwilling to do. The Reds are also demanding a £2million loan fee to allow the Harpurhey-born-defender to move away from Old Trafford for a season.

I think that the loan fee is more than fair. Williams is a player who has shown he’s more than good enough for the Premier League, while he’d be a guaranteed starter for Southampton.

If United’s and Williams’ wage demands are so high, the club needs to subsidise those somewhat. At the end of the day, he’s our player and we’d reap the benefits of him playing week-in-week-out of Southampton.

I’d like to think that this is just posturing on both sides, but we’ve been here before with United, they’re typically pretty tight when it comes to their pockets – so I wouldn’t be surprised if this falls through.

If this does move collapse, I’d hope United can find another potential suitor for Williams. I’m not sure there’s a better fit for him than Southampton at this point in time, though.
