BREAKING: Louis van Gaal confirmed as Manchester United manager

The news we’ve all been waiting for is finally in. Louis van Gaal is the new Manchester United manager. Van Gaal, 62, has joined on a three-year contract and will take over when his duties with the Holland national team ends after the World Cup.

Louis van Gaal becomes the first non-British/Irish manager of Manchester United, although Welshman Ryan Giggs will become his assistant manager. Van Gaal also brings in Dutch duo Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout as goalkeeping coach and opposition scout respectively.

In a statement, Louis van Gaal said:

“It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are. This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I’m sure we will make history.”

Ryan Giggs said the following:

“I am thrilled to have the chance to serve as assistant manager. Louis van Gaal is a world-class coach and I know I will learn a lot about coaching from being able to observe and contribute at such close quarters. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life and I’m delighted to be able to continue that relationship in such a key role.”

Well, at least we now know who our new manager is and I have to say I’m very excited for next season under Louis van Gaal. He’s one of the best managers in world football, and his strict regime will almost certainly shake things up in the Old Trafford dressing room – which is exactly what United need.

Despite being focussed on managing Holland in the upcoming World Cup, Van Gaal will need to make quick assessments of the squad that could only reach seventh place in the league, whilst identifying any potential new arrivals.

With the absence of Champions League football, van Gaal will have a great opportunity to take the club back towards the top of the Premier League.
