Manchester United confirmed the appointment of Louis van Gaal earlier today, but we’ve now learnt that the most decorated player in football history has retired as a player. Ryan Giggs has spent over twenty years at the club, and won a huge thirteen Premier League titles in his time.

Having amassed a huge 963 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 168 goals in his time, there is no doubt that Ryan will go down as the best player in the Premier League era. We’ll never see anyone like Giggsy again, and to continue playing at the highest level at the age of forty is an absolutely outstanding achievement.

Giggs won 34 trophies in his Manchester United career, and further endeared himself to United fans when he was named interim manager at the end of last season following David Moyes’ sacking.

He’ll now stay on as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal, and his fairytale story at the club could eventually wind up with him becoming Manchester United manager.

Thanks for everything, Ryan.
