Man United are set to hand Bruno Fernandes a new long-term contract at the club.
We’ve all witnessed it first-hand over the last few years. Manchester United have been a side in steady decline.
Wrong decisions at the board level have trickled down into the dressing room. Poor habits have been developed. The club is a far cry from the European powerhouse it was a decade ago.
I don’t doubt that United are trying their best. I do believe the Reds are doing all they can to put it right, but it will take time. It’s about changing the mentality into a more positive one.
The man who has been at the forefront of that over the last couple of years? Bruno Fernandes.
Our Portuguese Magnifico has been a revelation as soon as he walked through the Old Trafford doors. Goals, assists and most importantly, leadership.
He’s a talismanic figure you can build a side around. Hence why talks of a new contract in the media over the last 24 hours make perfect sense.
The BBC state that Fernandes is close to agreeing a new five-year contract at the Theatre of Dreams, with a ‘positive feeling’ about the outcome following a breakdown in talks before the turn of the year.
Fernandes still has three years left to run on his current deal, but if anyone within that dressing room deserves a wage hike and some long-term security, it’s him.
Although it’s unlikely a deal will be announced during the current international break, it does feel like only the minor details need to be ironed out.
We have to thank Bruno for his loyalty. It would’ve been easy for him to reject any deal placed in front of him because we’re not competing for major honours right now. Sure, a nice wage hike undoubtedly helps, but this guy strikes me as a winner first and foremost. He must believe in what the club is doing behind the scenes.
