After much posturing from both parties, it finally seems as though Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon have found some common ground in regards to the Bruno Fernandes signing.

Last night, reports were plentiful claiming that a deal was closing in. At 9pm UK time, journalist Goncalo Lopes, who has been all over this story from the start, made a bold claim.

He took to Twitter to claim that the deal is done, but not official, with the 25-year-old set to fly into Manchester today at lunchtime. Fernandes will apparently sign a contract until 2025. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will undoubtedly be pleased to land his man – although the Reds have left it until the last minute in order to get the best possible deal.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that injuries have forced United’s hand on this one. The Old Trafford club are without Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay in the long-term. Now, the likes of Fred and Andreas Pereira are going to get some much-needed help.

Fernandes, all being well, could walk straight into that team and immediately become the best midfielder at the club. Sure, we have to be realistic, there’s no way the Portugal international is going to put up the insane numbers he did in his homeland as he’ll no longer be the focal point of the attack.

However, you’d like to think Fernandes will be a massive improvement. I, for one, am excited to see him play. Hopefully, we can get him included in the squad to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday night…
