Well, folks, here it is. England has the opportunity to make it a first World Cup semi-final in over twenty years. Manchester United have a strong representation out in Russia with the Three Lions, with no fewer than four Red Devils within Gareth Southgate’s squad.
They take on an excellently well-drilled Sweden team, with Victor Lindelof proving pivotal at the heart of their back four. It’s certainly going to be an intriguing encounter.
In betting terms, England are favoured to make the final four, and no doubt man-of-the-moment Jesse Lingard is a huge factor in that. United’s #14 has become a mainstay in the starting line-up, largely thanks to his supreme movement, vision and on-ball ability. The way he drags defenders out of their comfort zone is a rare gift. It’s a commodity England are lucky to have.
Ashley Young has also turned into a starter for his country, and beating out competition from Danny Rose wasn’t easy. His work-rate on both sides of the ball has been great, but I’d love to see more quality from him in the final third.
Marcus Rashford’s best moment so far was scoring his shootout penalty against Colombia. He has been pushing Raheem Sterling hard for a starting job, but I still don’t think Southgate is ready to get away from the Manchester City man. Phil Jones has started once against Belgium, he was okay, but I’d be surprised if he starts for the tournament’s remainder (barring injury).
I’ve been massively impressed by Lindelof’s performances. He’ll face a huge task this afternoon, trying to keep Harry Kane quiet won’t be easy. As long as he starts well and doesn’t let the nerves settle in, the Ice Man should be fine. However, it’s still coming home. I fancy England to progress.
