Well, it seems as though the Red Devils are going to get their striker signing, after all. Edinson Cavani will seemingly be the guy for Man United, having agreed personal terms and already flying to Manchester…
It’s a story that has come out of nowhere really. That in itself is somewhat ironic given the fact that Cavani seems to be linked with a move to Old Trafford summer-in-summer-out. This time, though, the news seems genuine.
Once again, Fabrizio Romano is at the forefront of the saga. He took to Twitter late last night to give us the latest update on the Uruguayan’s pending move to Old Trafford.
Apparently, personal terms have been agreed with the player, leaving agent fees to be sorted in the coming hours. Cavani’s medical is pending, with the star already flying to Manchester (last night) ahead of signing for United.
So why Cavani?
Well, whichever way you dress it up, this stinks of a panic buy. Cavani has been a free agent all summer, with United leaving it until the last possible minute to make their move for the 33-year-old striker.
For Cavani, it’s a great move. He’ll no doubt be getting paid a hefty wage, while agent’s fees of around €10m means he’ll be delighted, too. The Red Devils have been played like a fiddle, in our opinion.
That’s not to say Cavani can’t make a difference. He’s markedly better than Odion Ighalo and the ex-PSG man will push Anthony Martial all the way when it comes to starting games.
I just feel like this is a way to appease the fans, by going after a marquee name after struggling to sign players all window. I will add that big-name moves haven’t suited us well recently, though. Angel di Maria, Falcao and Alexis Sanchez are the best examples of that.
I hope Cavani proves us wrong, scores loads of goals and justifies this deal. However, it does feel like Solskjaer is abandoning his mantra to get this deal done…
