Manchester United’s summer transfer window left plenty to be desired, though a couple of deadline day moves were made. Edinson Cavani seems to be building up his fitness nicely, impressing the fans with an excellent cameo vs West Brom.
El Matador would score his first United goal against Everton before the international break. He’d back that up with a lovely strike for his country, too.
It looked for all the world like Cavani would start his first United game last night, though in the end, he’d have to settle for another substitute appearance. The Uruguayan international wasn’t going to let that stop him, mind.
An argument can be made that he was possibly United’s best player on the day, albeit only being on the field for 30 minutes. The game changed when he entered. United suddenly looked more dominant, more in control, more likely to score.
Not only is Cavani a lethal scorer when given the chance, but it’s also his all-round game. The hold-up play was superb, he’d bring others into play while slowly pushing West Brom back, deeper and deeper into their own half of the field.
I guess all that was missing was a goal. Cavani had a couple of golden chances due to his brilliant movement and running in between the lines, though the final ball into him was often lacking in quality. Those opportunities will become more frequent, though, as he and his new teammates get used to each other’s style of play.
Anthony Martial can definitely learn a lot from the now 33-year-old Cavani, as can Marcus Rashford, too. For now, it looks like our number seven has to be one of the first names on the team-sheet.
The fans were buzzing all over social media with the excellent cameo from the substitute Cavani last night. We’ve compiled our favourite tweets below.
