Man United are going to lose Charlie McNeill this summer.
Manchester United Football Club have made it common knowledge that they’re looking to clear the first-team decks this summer, before implementing tighter budgets in regard to both the transfer kitty and weekly wages.
Several first-teamers, like Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial, are all set to leave this summer. Well, the culling is not being halted at senior level, with one talented youngster also looking to depart.
It’s Manchester World with the scoop, who claim that Charlie McNeill will walk away from Old Trafford this summer on a free transfer.
The once highly regarded United starlet, who was signed from fierce rivals Manchester City, was absolutely lethal at youth level. That led to the Reds’ interest.
However, McNeill will look for a ‘fresh’ challenge after a frustrating couple of years. Loan moves at both Newport County and Stevenage have not had the desired effect.
Players like Joe Hugill and Ethan Wheatley have leapfrogged McNeill in the pecking order, though the young Mancunian is still attracting plenty of interest.
Aged just 20, it’s easy to forget that McNeill scored 34 goals in 35 appearances at youth level for United before hitting this slump. Yes, injuries haven’t helped, but there has been no clear pathway into the first-team for the striker. Perhaps a move away is exactly what’s required to reignite that fire in his belly.
A move to the Championship looks like the most likely option, though there is interest in McNeill from both Germany and Portugal if he fancies a complete change of scenery.
While it would be sad to see McNeill leave, I completely understand the decision from both sides. I would like to see some sort of buyback clause included in his contract, too.
