Chelsea set to rival Man United for Frenkie de Jong signature

Man United could now face an uphill battle to bring Frenkie de Jong to the club.

It has been blatantly clear from day one that Manchester United have prioritised bringing in a new midfielder this summer.

After all, the club have to replace both Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba who left on free transfers, though genuine quality is needed.

Frenkie de Jong has been the name on everyone’s lips. The Dutchman has worked with Erik ten Hag previously – and to great success.

Well, the Old Trafford club have been dealt a transfer blow in pursuit of De Jong. That’s if the latest information from Relevo is correct anyway.

They state that fellow Premier League club, Chelsea, ‘bursts in’ to try and sign the player too. The Blues are said to be ‘very interested’ in De Jong, as they’re seemingly looking to get ahead of United in the transfer race.

It goes without saying, this is pretty horrendous for many reasons. First and foremost, Chelsea can match us financially. They also have Champions League football on the table, while we do not…

The only slight edge United have is that Ten Hag and De Jong have worked together previously. Whether that can usurp Chelsea’s other advantages remains to be seen.

Although it’s good that United aren’t willing to be pushed over in the transfer market anymore, the delay could eventually cost Ten Hag his number one target of the summer.

At this point, United have spent so much time on De Jong, losing out on his signature would be nothing but an abject failure. Other potential targets have now moved on, while we’d now also be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

  1. de Jong won’t be at United next season. One thing that recent history shows us is that the Utd negotiating team are incompetent. It won’t be a Fellaini transfer window but not far off!
