Chris Smalling’s antics cost his Manchester United teammates dearly

Manchester United were more than holding their own in the Champions’ backyard yesterday, up until the 39th minute when Chris Smalling got himself sent off for a cynical challenge just before the half-time whistle. Smalling picked up two needless bookings, which went on to cost his teammates dearly come the full-time whistle.

All week Louis van Gaal has been going on about the importance of not doing something stupid and getting yourself sent off in a Manchester derby, and it really does make you wonder what on earth was going through Chris Smalling’s mind when scythed down Aguero in the manner he did.

Louis van Gaal condemned his centre-back in his post match interview, and rightly so:

In a derby you have to be careful – the second yellow card is a stupid yellow card,”

“The sending-off is not one of those things. As a player you have to control your aggression.

“I didn’t see the first yellow but with the second, you know you already have a yellow, so have to handle it differently. I said that to the players.”

After reading those comments, and seeing the look on Ryan Giggs’ and Louis van Gaal’s face after the game, I doubt that Smalling will immediately return to the starting XI when he is back from his ban.
