Christian Eriksen put in a quality first-half performance against Real Sociedad, showing why he could be the best signing conducted by Manchester United conduct this summer.
Manchester United’s squad looks vastly different than it did a few months ago. Not only was Erik ten Hag brought in to get more out of the players currently at the club. He was also tasked with overhauling an ageing squad filled with stars who were underperforming.
Big money has been spent, though over ten first-teamers had to leave during the summer transfer window. Hence, United couldn’t afford to not break the bank this time around.
Ironically, perhaps the cheapest bit of business was the absolute best; Christian Eriksen.
The Dane joined on a free transfer. At the time, his signing was questioned by large portions of the United fan-base. Many viewed him as a sub-par alternative to replace the outbound Paul Pogba.
However, from day one, the underrated United star continues to show why he’s likely the best bit of business United have completed in recent years. We don’t like to blow our own trumpet, but we were on the hype train from the start of the summer.
Last night’s first-half cameo against Real Sociedad was just another indicator as to why Eriksen is so important. In summary, United play far better team football when he’s on the field.
Eriksen is key when it comes to chance creation. He knows when to pick the right pass in order to maintain possession or to try and carve out a big opportunity for his team. He played a wonderful ball into the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo last night, that absolutely deserved to end in a goal.
Putting the Brentford game to one side, this has been the common theme for Eriksen. He’s that metronomic midfielder who ensures the play is ticking over, while he also doesn’t mind getting stuck in on the defensive side of the ball, either.
When you think about the horrific scenario which played out at the European Championships, when Eriksen’s heart literally stopped beating, it’s incredible to see where he is today.
Brentford deserve credit for taking a chance on Eriksen, though the 30-year-old always had a dream of returning to the highest level. He’s doing exactly that right now.
It’s also pretty justifying from the standpoint of a fan who always rated Pogba’s ability, but not his mentality, to see United playing well with Eriksen at the heart of the side. Over in Italy, Pogba is dealing with some serious family issues while also sitting on Juventus’ treatment table.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that Eriksen has truly been a breath of fresh air to watch over the last month or so. United have been crying out for a player like him for years – and credit to Erik ten Hag for getting the absolute best out of the ex-Spurs man in such a short space of time.
