Christian Eriksen has explained why he chose squad number 14 at Man United.
All of Manchester United’s summer signings have more than played their part already this season. Credit must go to Erik ten Hag for that – who immediately identified weaknesses within the squad and started to plug those holes.
Perhaps the most underrated signing over the summer was Christian Eriksen. The Dane, who has been nothing short of spectacular, has impressed the fans endlessly.
The tempo, control and experience he brings has been nothing but vital. Not bad for a free transfer, eh?
Eriksen, 30, has recently conducted an interview with the club website. Amongst the topics of discussion is why he picked squad number 14 at United – with thanks to his son.
Check out what Christian Eriksen had to say on his number at United here:
“I didn’t pick it, my son picked it!” Eriksen told ManUtd.com.
“We had a few options, a few numbers and I wrote him a list of the numbers available, and he picked number 14.”
At the time, there wasn’t an awful lot available. However, the number 14 definitely suits his play style. I’m old school in that fact. It just makes sense when a player chooses a number specific to his position. Your striker has to wear 9, while your centre-halves should wear number 5 for instance.
Back on Eriksen, he’s just been a revelation. The midfielder’s quietly-effective playing style has absolutely transformed this United line-up. Suddenly, United look like they have control on matches – which, in recent years, hasn’t been there.
Without wanting to throw shade on Paul Pogba (who is yet to play this season), this has been a huge upgrade on the Frenchman. There’s no drama, a better fit for the system and a top pro. You absolutely love to see it.
