Newcastle United genuinely believe they can prise Dean Henderson away from Man United this summer.
Manchester United’s list of summer departures seems to be growing by the day. Loads of first-team regulars will leave on free transfers while others who are deemed surplus to requirements are likely to be sold.
It all depends on who Erik ten Hag wants to work with going forward. I guess we’ll have a clearer picture of that when pre-season starts.
One area I didn’t think United would mess around with too much is goalkeeper. However, their hand could be forced. Dean Henderson is, understandably, frustrated at his lack of playing time. It was always likely some clubs would test United’s resolve in regards to the Englishman.
Well, the Northern Echo believe that Newcastle United are ‘confident’ of signing the 25-year-old Reds star this summer. So much so that they’re willing to let two first-team goalkeepers leave.
Eddie Howe is keen to overhaul his goalkeeping ranks this summer. He even looked at bringing in Henderson back in January – but that didn’t materialise.
Henderson made just three starts in 2021/22. For a goalkeeper with genuine first-team potential at the highest level, that’s just not good enough.
It’s claimed that Newcastle will bid around £15m for Henderson, with a hope that a deal can be reached relatively quickly when the transfer window officially opens.
For me, selling Henderson feels like a mistake. United have a ready-made replacement for David de Gea waiting in the wings. And letting him go just doesn’t make much sense – particularly with United likely then needing to spend big to replace the Spaniard.
I’d rather let De Gea go one year early and give Henderson a chance, than wait one year extra and lose the Englishman as a result.
It can also be argued Henderson fits into Ten Hag’s possession-based system far better than De Gea. Let’s be honest, distribution is undoubtedly the Spaniard’s biggest weakness.
