Club ready to pay up to £17.6million for versatile Manchester United defender: report

Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian is the latest name to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford. It comes from the usually reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who say that Juventus have made their first contact with United about the possibility of signing the right-back.

Darmian, 27, is seen as the Turin-based club’s number one replacement for Dani Alves who is about to leave the Old Lady this summer. The reported transfer fee is €20m (£17.6m), which is a hell of a lot of money for a player who was in and out of the United team last season.

It’s clear to me that Jose Mourinho is a fan of Darmian’s, hence why he started at left-back in the Europa League final. The fact that he can play at both wing-back slots shows his real versatility – but he isn’t of that elite level in my opinion.

If the aforementioned offer does come in for the Italian, I’d be all for selling him and bringing in a specialist left-back. It’s an area of the field where United struggled last season, with the boss giving Darmian, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo a chance to make that job there own – all of which failed.
