Cody Gakpo will not join rivals, wants to join ‘bigger club’ like Man United

Cody Gakpo will not join Leeds United, as he wants to move to a bigger club – like Man United.

Over the summer, Manchester United made the decision to bring in Antony from Ajax. The deal dragged on and dragged on, with an agreement finally reached towards the back end of the summer.

Eventually, the Brazil international signed for a fee in excess of £80m. To be fair to the winger, he’s starting to repay that real show of faith by the manager, scoring in each of his first three league games.

At the time, another name was linked; Cody Gakpo.

The Dutchman, who currently plies his trade for PSV Eindhoven, has started the season in scintillating form. Undoubtedly, more heads are starting to turn, with the winger looking impressive.

Leeds United were rumoured to be the frontrunners, though those links have been shut down.

Apparently, the 23-year-old is unlikely to join one of the Reds’ fiercest rivals. That’s because the player would want to move to a ‘bigger club’ like United. Real Madrid, City and FC Barcelona are all named. On top of that, a move in January is not out of the question.

Check out Florian Plettenberg’s tweet on the Cody Gakpo situation here:

I honestly don’t see United moving for Gakpo in the winter window, though I fear that’s probably their best chance to sign the wide man.

It all comes down to how badly Erik ten Hag wants him – and whether there is the £30m+ available to bring him in. If United leave it till next summer, I believe Gakpo will have more attractive options available to him. That’s the harsh reality of where the Red Devils are at right now.

That said, this one would be a gamble. Whisper it quietly, I’m sort of getting Memphis Depay vibes here. We all know how that one turned out…
