Confirmed MUFC squad vs Villareal (Champions League away, 2021/22)

Manchester United’s travelling squad for their game vs Villareal has now been confirmed.

What a whirlwind of a couple of days it has been for Michael Carrick. Now, the ex-Red midfielder finds himself in the dugout and leading Manchester United into battle during an all-important Champions League encounter.

Albeit only on an interim basis, Carrick will be feeling the pressure. A win here and we’re in the driving seat to qualify. Lose and suddenly we find ourselves back in the thick of it.

Playing in the Champions League is why big-name players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane chose to come here. We have to keep them happy.

Anyway, ahead of the game, the squad news is now in, with Carrick naming a 23-strong travelling party. Two of which will be unavailable for selection, though…

Confirmed MUFC squad vs Villareal in full (via Manchester Evening News):

David de Gea, Dean Henderson, Tom Heaton, Lee Grant*, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Phil Jones*, Diogo Dalot, Alex Telles, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek, Jesse Lingard, Amad, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial.

Note: Grant and Jones haven’t been registered for the Champions League, so they’re unavailable for selection.

There’s one fresh absentee, with Luke Shaw seemingly not fit enough to play in this one. The Englishman has been left at home which does present Alex Telles with a chance to make his mark.

It’s nice to see Amad out there following injury, while the likes of Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho will be hoping to get an opportunity to prove their worth.

At the end of the day, this squad is massively talented. Whatever starting line-up Carrick decides to go with, we should have more than enough quality to get some sort of positive result.

That’s not to say Villareal should be taken lightly, but if we play to our capabilities, this should be a formality. The likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea would ensure of a positive result and if we want to be considered as good as those sides, we have to do the same.

Best of luck to Carrick and the lads this evening!
