Confirmed MUFC XI vs Liverpool (Premier League away, 2021/22)

Our confirmed MUFC XI for the game vs Liverpool is now in…

Manchester United take on the old enemy at Anfield this evening. I don’t care what anyone says, this is the biggest rivalry within English football and it will not change anytime soon.

As for the game itself, there’s a huge gulf in quality between the sides. Sadly, it’s not in our favour.

Ralf Rangnick has done a decent job on an interim basis and he’s a thoroughly likeable bloke, but it’s going to take years to restore this club to it’s former glory.

Being in next season’s Champions League would help, but that relies on us getting a positive result here – which obviously looks unlikely.

Anyway, the team news is now in, with the reds springing at least one major surprise in terms of the starting line-up.

David de Gea does start in between the sticks, which was probably the easiest decision Rangnick had to make ahead of this one.

Injuries are decimating the squad right now, though the back four does have a familiar look. Aaron Wan-Bissaka starts at right-back over Diogo Dalot, who switches to the left-hand side. A back two of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof never really fills you with confidence, does it?

Here’s where it gets intriguing. Phil Jones starts. Yes, you did read that correctly. This is a man who has barely played any senior football this season, starting in a huge rivalry match. Work that one out. Nemanja Matic also plays, with Paul Pogba completing the midfield.

It looks as though Bruno Fernandes is starting as a false nine here. Again, that doesn’t fill me with much hope, but needs-must. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga are deployed on the wings, presumably for their pace and youthful exubrance.

Come on you Reds!
