Michael Carrick has named his first MUFC starting XI, with the Reds gearing up to play vs Villareal this evening…
Although Michael Carrick likely won’t be in the job for too long, you have to allow him to pick the side he wants in the meantime – rather than sticking with the same old plan that failed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time and time again.
I’ll be honest, I thought we’d see one or two changes. However, Carrick has gone big here, dropping Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford down to the bench. Luke Shaw hasn’t travelled at all…
Carrick is seemingly trying to put his own stamp on things, proving that he probably didn’t fully agree with the team that his predecessor continued to pic week-in-week-out.

David de Gea does keep his place in between the sticks, with the Spaniard probably in for a busy evening given the quality of opponent.
The back four has one change, with Alex Telles coming into the side in place of Shaw who misses out altogether. Harry Maguire does start, probably due to his domestic suspension meaning he’ll be unavailable at the weekend. Victor Lindelof plays, as does Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Scott McTominay and Fred remain together in the heart of our midfield. Sadly, there aren’t many other options in that defensive-midfield role so the gaffer doesn’t really have a choice. Donny van de Beek gets the nod ahead of Bruno Fernandes who looked desperate for a rest last time out.
Cristiano Ronaldo starts up top, with the Portugal international looking to continue his outstanding Champions League campaign from a personal point of view. Anthony Martial comes into the side which is a bold call, with Jadon Sancho making up the XI.
