Conte trying to make Lukaku his first Inter Milan signing: report

Antonio Conte is close to being named Inter Milan manager, and the former Chelsea boss is already trying to make an impact in the transfer window.

According to the usually reliable ESPN, the Italian wants to make 26-year-old Romelu Lukaku his first signing with the Serie A giants.

Lukaku’s time at United has been mixed. The star striker hit the ground running, scoring goals in bucketloads, but about six months in, things started to dry up.

United’s #9 still actually has a decent strike rate, scoring 42 times in 96 Red Devils appearances, but he’s often criticised for his failure to turn up when it matters most. For a man who cost £75million, I think it’s fair to demand more from him.

A central striker sits atop of Conte’s wish list at Inter, and don’t forget that the former Juventus manager tried to steal Lukaku from under United’s nose when he was at Stamford Bridge a couple of years ago. Perhaps Conte feels as though he has unfinished business in that regard.

I like Lukaku, I think he’s a good striker, but if United can recoup most of what they paid to sign him a couple of years ago, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cash in…
