Man United are set to give minutes to both Diogo Dalot and Donny van de Beek vs Brentford tonight.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s pre-season has been fairly average thus far. Performances against both Derby County and QPR left plenty to be desired. Later tonight, the action continues against Brentford.
With each passing game, more senior players are returning to the training field following representing their countries over the summer.
Well, ahead of the game, we’ve been given some early team news by MEN journo, Tyrone Marshall. Apparently, Solskjaer has confirmed that first-team duo of Diogo Dalot and Donny van de Beek will be involved later – their first minutes of pre-season.
There was also some further good news, with Dean Henderson back in training, along with Bruno Fernandes. Presumably, this game has come a little too quick for the pair, though it won’t be long before they’re back in action.
For both Dalot and Van de Beek, this pre-season is massive. If United fail to sign a right-back this summer, Dalot will start the season as back-up to Aaron Wan-Bislama. Many believe the Portuguese is more than capable of surpassing ‘The Spider’ in the pecking order.
As for Van de Beek, he’s had a torrid twelve months, summed up by the fact he’d pick up an injury on international duty – ending his EURO 2020 before it even started.
We all know how talented he is. It’s just that he struggled for confidence and minutes during his first season in Manchester. I’d like to think that’ll change this time around – and it all starts with a good pre-season.
Hopefully, these guys both start tomorrow, get some minutes under their belt and earn Solskjaer’s trust before the serious stuff starts next month.
