It’s no surprise to hear this news following probably De Gea’s worst performance in United colours.
The story comes from The Times, who states that Solskjaer ‘could’ hand 33-year-old Sergio Romero the start against West Ham due to De Gea’s poor form.
At the very least, the Baby Faced Assassin wouldn’t be doing his due diligence if he didn’t think about doing exactly that. However, I’d be surprised if Solskjaer makes such a bold decision at this stage of the season.
Sure, Romero is a more-than-reliable back-up who has hardly let us down over the years. Though De Gea is the undisputed number one who is infinitely more talented than his Argentine counterpart.
Our Norwegian leader remained tight-lipped on the situation at today’s pre-match press conference, which leads me to believe that it will be De Gea who gets the start.
If I were in charge, though, I’d be handing Romero his opportunity. If not for the simple fact it’d give De Gea that extra motivation to perform better in order to win his job back.
What happens next season…?
Then you have to think about the bigger picture. With Dean Henderson waiting in the wings, does Solskjaer go for someone completely different in the 2020/21 campaign?
It’s a finely balanced situation. Make the switch too early and it can come back to haunt you. Don’t put trust in Henderson and you may well lose him to a direct rival in the not too distant future.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that this could be a career-defining decision for Solskjaer as a manager. I honestly don’t envy him in the slightest, but my view is that it’s Henderson’s time to shine…
