Man United fans were not happy with their number one, David de Gea, after an atrocious display vs RB Leipzig last night…
I’d like to start this one by stating that I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for David de Gea. Without him over the last half-decade, Manchester United would be far worse off than they are now.
However, over the last year or so, something has changed with our once-fearless superstar Spaniard. Suddenly, he looks a shadow of his former self. No longer is he the undisputed best goalkeeper on the planet. Last night against RB Leipzig was only further proof of that.
I’ll get my excuse in early. Perhaps he’s still feeling the effects of the injury he’d pick up against Southampton, but maybe I’m just being too generous…
The phrase ‘bottled it’ is one I hate using. De Gea’s unwillingness to come out of his net and go through any player to get the ball has always been his biggest weakness. Last night, he backed out of a tackle involving Justin Kluivert, allowing Leipzig to make it 3-0, leaving United with too much work to do.
Now De Gea was far from the only problem last night, though mistakes like that at the highest level are just unforgivable. Put it this way, Dean Henderson simply wouldn’t have allowed that to happen.
It just looked like De Gea couldn’t really be bothered last night. He made no attempt to stop Angelino’s opening goal, albeit a lovely strike, the Spaniard didn’t even try to save it. Time and time again he looked disinterested and that’s just not what you’d expect from someone you’re paying massive wages to.
As you’d imagine, United fans were left fuming with their key player for the woeful performance vs Leipzig. They took to Twitter to vent their frustration…
