David de Gea expected to start Europa League final vs Villareal: report

David de Gea is set to get the Europa League final nod vs Villareal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had a goalkeeping selection dilemma all season. The David de Gea vs Dean Henderson battle has been an intriguing one.

Our English shot-stopper managed to chase down his Spanish counterpart to take over as first-choice in mid-season, though a poor game against Liverpool from Hendo had the Baby Faced Assassin thinking twice.

It seems as though De Gea has been reinstalled as numero uno, with Henderson deputising against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend.

Now, we’ve been given the clearest indication that the Spaniard is in line to start in Gdansk tomorrow.

The story comes from Stretty News, with journalist Leah Smith offering an update. She claims that the 30-year-old United star De Gea is ‘expected’ to be given the nod to start in the Europa League final – relegating Henderson to the bench.

It’s stressed that Solskjaer hasn’t made a firm decision at this point. However, the general feeling is that De Gea will be the man chosen to start in between the sticks.

So what happens now?

If this information turns out to be correct then Henderson is not going to be happy. It goes without saying, he believes he deserves to be playing week-in-week-out football – and I would agree with him.

Solskjaer has a massive decision to make on the future of this position. Simply put, one goalkeeper must go this summer and I’d imagine that it’ll likely be the person who is benched tomorrow evening.

I’ve made my feelings known before. This is the perfect opportunity to transition from De Gea while putting a real show of faith in Henderson. One bad game against Liverpool doesn’t destroy all the Englishman’s good work over the course of an excellent campaign from the 24-year-old.
