David de Gea may not be guaranteed to be Man United’s number one keeper next season, despite the fact he’s close to agreeing a new deal.
Manchester United’s recent form is worrying, to say the least. The lads seem low on confidence and low on energy. It’s going to take a monumental effort to close out the season strong and finish inside the top four.
All the chatter this week has (rightly) been about David de Gea. The Spaniard made a huge error away at West Ham United on Sunday, making it difficult for his side to win the game. Unfortunately, these types of errors have become a regular part of his game this term.
The fans are now starting to question De Gea, despite the fact he’s in contract negotiations with the club. Although he’ll take a salary reduction if this new deal is signed, the fact that he’ll remain is a cause for concern given his recent form.
The Telegraph have since ran a story on De Gea, claiming that the United star has been ‘given no assurances’ he will remain a first-choice player next season, despite the fact he is edging closer to signing a new deal.
The United boss, Erik ten Hag, is keeping his options open at the number one position right now. The article states that David Raya and Diogo Costa are among the players the club have looked at to potentially replace De Gea.
A decision also has to be made on Dean Henderson, who is a good keeper in his own right. He also wants to be a number one option for a club – be it at United or elsewhere.
The problem? Money could be tight if United do not have their ownership status sorted out before the summer. With a new striker still remaining a priority, there is a good chance that De Gea will remain as the number one for at least a little while yet. Honestly, I have doubts about the Spaniard right now and I’m not sure this is the best idea…
