Manchester United have done a pretty good job at getting players to commit to new contracts during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s short tenure, but there is much work to be done.
The Red Devils’ top priority, without question, should be keeping ahold of David de Gea in the long-term. The Spaniard is yet to commit to a new lengthy deal, leaving United with no choice but to activate a one-year extension clause in his contract.
De Gea could walk away for free in the summer of 2020, although now, the Manchester Evening News are reporting that the shot-stopper is keen to stay at United; although he realises how important winning the Champions League in his career is.
MEN Sport sources say that De Gea believes qualification for next season’s Champions League is critical in contract negotiations; making it all-the-more vital that United now go on a good run of form.
We’re currently sitting in behind Arsenal in the standings and the Red Devils simply must hit the ground running, starting with a home victory against Watford this weekend.
Failure to finish in the top four leaves winning the Champions League as the only option to partake in the tournament next season, which is obviously easier said than done given our next opponents.
It’s just frustrating to see De Gea stalling on committing, but you cannot really blame him. We’ve not given him a reason to stick around in terms of trophies, and at this point in his career, that’s far more important than his weekly wage.
