David de Gea has earned all the plaudits heading his way right now, while also being included in the latest BBC Team of the Week.
As the season was getting underway, David de Gea was coming in for heavy criticism. The performances weren’t at the elite level we’d become accustomed to, while calls to start dean Henderson on a regular basis were growing. I’ll admit, I was amongst those vying for Hendo to get his big chance.
To De Gea’s credit, he’s never once let his elite mindset slip. Instead, the superstar Spaniard kept working hard, putting in the effort and allowed his confidence to slowly build back up.
Now, we’re starting to see those top-drawer performances once again. Against Aston Villa, we were treated to exactly that. De Gea would make some sublime saves, most notably one to deny a header from Ollie Watkins. He’d also deny Matty Cash late on with a supreme diving effort to his right.
For that top-quality performance, De Gea was the only United star to be named in Garth Crooks’ latest Team of the Week. He was more than deserving of his spot in goal, too.

It just goes to show that you never lose that god-given ability, even when mentally, you’re struggling. For us to have any chance at a Premier League title this term, we’re going to need De Gea at his absolute best because there are going to be games where United simply don’t play well and a clean-sheet is going to be the minimum requirement.
I can make a case for Aaron Wan-Bissaka to be in this team. Paul Pogba too. However, what I’m most pleased about is the fact that this United side is playing like a team – and that’s brilliant to see.
