David de Gea ‘one of the best’ goalkeepers in the world: Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick has labelled David de Gea as one of the best in the business.

Manchester United have gotten an awful lot of stuff wrong over the last few years. From signing the wrong players, to handing large contracts to those that don’t deserve it.

One area in which the club have been impeccable in is goalkeepers. David de Gea was an absolutely brilliant signing from Atletico Madrid a decade ago, while he’s always had quality backups to help him out.

Over the last couple of seasons prior to this one, our superstar Spaniard was suffering from a major blip in form. He’d make silly mistakes due to a lack of concentration, with Dean Henderson pushing him hard for the starting berth.

However, in the 2021/22 campaign, we’ve seen a De Gea back to his insane best. He’s making those world-class saves again and winning football matches for us single-handedly at times.

Away at Brentford yesterday, De Gea was the star of the show in that first half. So much so that after the game, Rangnick labelled the United star ‘one of the best’ goalkeepers in the world. I don’t think he’s wrong…

Check out what the gaffer had to say here:

“Yes, we were fortunate to be level. We have to be honest,” Rangnick said to Sky Sports. “Without David and his brilliant saves, it would’ve been difficult to have had a clean sheet by half-time.

“We weren’t strong enough in the centre of the pitch and we were losing almost every 50-50 situation. We were too nervous on the ball and the opponents were extremely aggressive and brave in pressing us.”

“David has been doing that the last couple of weeks – brilliant saves in first half. He is one of the best keepers in the world, I would say.”

At the start of the season, there was genuine competition for the starting goalkeeper job. De Gea has extinguished any chance that Dean Henderson had. Now, the Englishman is probably likely to leave either on loan or permanently.

As much as I love Hendo, I just cannot argue with what De Gea is doing at the moment. It’s also worth noting he’s still relatively young for a goalkeeper and he has plenty of time left in him.

For me, I’m just delighted for De Gea first and foremost. He’s come in for some stick recently and you have to just sit back and applaud how he’s silenced his doubters and critics so easily.

He’s definitely back in the top five as things stand. Now, if the rest of the team around him can sort their act out, we’ll be in excellent shape…
