David de Gea is in top tier form for the first time in years.
Manchester United squeezed past Villareal at Old Trafford last night, in a game that Manchester United simply had to win.
It took until the 94th minute for Cristiano Ronaldo (who else?) to make the breakthrough.
However, the only reason we were still in the game was due to David de Gea. Our superstar Spaniard has had himself an excellent start to the season in Dean Henderson’s absence.
Last night was his best display in at least a few years, with De Gea once again adopting the ‘You Shall Not Pass’ mentality. He’d make top-tier saves with his legs and hands, keeping Villareal at bay almost single-handedly at times.
Journalist James Ducker was amongst those to credit the resurgent United star who is definitely back to his best.
Check out what Ducker had to say here:
As Ducker says, it’s wonderful to see him in this elite form. De Gea was once the best in the business and right now, he’s definitely performing at close to that level. If he keeps this up, we’ll have a chance in each and every game we play.
Perhaps the pushing from Dean Henderson just in behind is helping De Gea rediscover that elite mindset. After all, having competition always makes you work harder.
With both vying for regular stars, De Gea has had to kick on and take his game to that next level. At the start of this campaign, he’s done exactly that.
Now, if our outfield players can start pulling their weight, there’s every chance we can turn this poor run of overall form around and get back to stringing wins together sooner rather than later.
