David de Gea ready to call time on his Man United career: report

David de Gea is looking to bring his time at Manchester United to an end.

Dean Henderson taking up the mantle as Manchester United’s number one has been more than a year in the making.

For all their faults over the years, the Old Trafford outfit have been practically flawless when it comes to choosing their goalkeepers. From David de Gea to Hendo, with plenty of Sergio Romero sprinkled in between.

For me, De Gea’s the best we’ve ever had. The only blot on his resume is the lack of trophies but ability-wise, I’d choose him over the likes of Edwin van der Sar and Peter Schmeichel. Sadly, though, he could be set for an exit from the Theatre of Dreams.

The story comes from the Daily Mail, who state that the key United star is ‘ready to call time’ on his Reds career. After all, there’s no chance someone so talented would be content with sitting on the bench.

Obviously, this story breaks less than 48 hours after Henderson was seemingly made Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper, with De Gea’s camp already sounding out potential buyers.

No transfer fee has been officially mentioned yet, but it’s claimed United would want £50million to part with the 30-year-old. It’s noted his hefty wages could be a stumbling block, though.

Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and PSG are all named as potential suitors for one reason or another, though while we’re still in the middle of a global pandemic, United may well have to subsidise De Gea’s wages for the next couple of seasons.

The time is right

De Gea is an unbelievable footballer and an even better bloke. It’ll be sad to see him leave but over the last couple of seasons, the mistakes have crept into his game and maybe he just needs a change of scenery.

With Henderson now playing at a higher level, while having ample room to grow, it makes sense to make the bold change now. Credit to Solskjaer by the way, as he has timed this perfectly.

I just hope that there’s no bad blood between United and De Gea, while I’m positive he’ll find a new club this summer. Hopefully one back in his homeland of Spain where he can be closer to his family.
