David de Gea is ready to take a pay cut in order to remain a Man United player.

Manchester United’s David de Gea played arguably his best game of the season last time out. The superstar Spaniard made some cracking saves late on, to preserve his clean sheet as the Reds beat West Ham 1-0.

All the talk this term has been about the stylistic fit. Many, myself included, believe United’s current number one cannot adapt to the Erik ten Hag style. Our gaffer thinks otherwise.

With a winding down contract, De Gea’s future is absolutely up in the air right now.

However, The Athletic’s Football Podcast, with some help from The Sun, seem to think otherwise. They believe the 31-year-old’s future could still lie at Old Trafford.

According to the report, the United star is willing to take a pay cut in order to stay at the club for at least one more season.

De Gea has been at United since 2011, though clearly the club believe his current £375k-a-week pay-packet is just too much at this point in time.

Talks are yet to commence over an extension to De Gea’s current deal which expires in 2023, though the Reds do have the option to extend that deal by a further year.

The Athletic claim that De Gea is ready to take action himself, in order to remain in the North West. Apparently, he’s ‘open’ to accepting reduced terms in order to remain a Red Devil for at least one more year. Apparently, talks could start following the World Cup.

OTF’s verdict

De Gea has hardly let United down. If he can adapt to the Ten Hag style of play, then there’s no keeper in the world I’d rather have.

We have to be honest here, though. De Gea knows no club out there will come close to matching the £375k-a-week wages, hence why he’s willing to stay at United – probably still on more money than he’d get elsewhere. There’s nothing wrong with that. This is his career, after all.
