David de Gea’s position as Man United #1 set to come under scrutiny this summer: report

Manchester United Football Club have been in topsy-turvy form, practically ever since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to walk away from the beautiful game.

However, one position that has always remained solid was goalkeeper. Fergie left United in great hands with David de Gea, who has been amongst the best shot-stoppers in the business over the last decade.

The superstar Spaniard, now 29, has been somewhat error-prone over the last twelve months, though. Another high-profile mistake was made this weekend against Everton.

Now, the United star’s starting spot, and undisputed position as the Red Devils’ number one, is to come under threat for the first time this summer. That’s according to the Daily Mail.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has kept the faith in De Gea despite some big errors, with United hoping the #1 can play his way back into form. If those mistakes continue, though, the Baby Faced Assassin may have a big decision to make…

What’s interesting to me is that the Daily Mail claim that United will ‘assess’ their goalkeeping situation over the next few months and are even set to hold talks with 22-year-old Dean Henderson’s representatives before March.

The United starlet has been in super form for Sheffield United while on loan this term. He’s now seen as a ‘genuine threat’ to De Gea. However, the DM do add that the Englishman is ‘likely’ to be sent out on loan for a third season, unless De Gea’s situation changes.

This is the first genuine sign of trouble for De Gea. For me, I’d make the switch to Henderson this summer, though I understand that’s much easier said than done…
