New five-year deal in place, Man United set to tie down key player: report

Manchester United are set to tie David de Gea down to a new five-year contract; making him the highest-paid goalkeeper on the planet.

That’s according to Spanish media outlet Marca, translated by talkSPORT. Apparently, De Gea will now earn a huge £18.4million-a-year; roughly £350,000-a-week.

If anyone within our squad deserves astronomical wages, it’s De Gea. The Spaniard has been sensational for United over the last few years, winning three Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards in four seasons.

Every summer, the De Gea to Real Madrid rumours have always swirled, but if the Old Trafford club can tie him down to another long-term deal, that should silence that gossip for a couple of years at least.

If the contract is signed, the 27-year-old will remain at the club for his best years. We’re genuinely witnessing greatness with De Gea, and if he does spend the remainder of his career here, there’s a huge chance that he’ll go down as our best shot-stopper ever; eclipsing world-class footballers like Edwin van der Saar and Peter Schmeichel.

Perhaps we’ll have to wait for an official announcement, though. He’s currently out in Russia with the Spain national team. They take on Iran later today.
