In today’s edition of the Matthijs de Ligt daily, it feels as though Manchester United’s race is run.
According to today’s print edition of Catalan media outlet Sport, translated by Sport Witness, it is being claimed that De Ligt has ‘discarded’ Manchester United as a potential suitor due to the lack of Champions League football.
Although Sport state that United are once again, still interested in signing De Ligt this summer.
To me, though, it always felt like the Red Devils were involved in a battle they simply couldn’t win. Let’s be honest, who are we to compete with the likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Liverpool? Those four all have Champions League football on offer. All won major trophies this season while we’re battling Arsenal for fifth place in the league it seems…

De Ligt is a fantastic player, a brilliant talent. Aged just 19 he’s already amongst the elite centre-halves in the world. Having a top-class player like him within our ranks would have certainly been a brilliant way to start the summer.
Not only for his ability, but for his leadership qualities. I’m in awe of just how mature this young man is despite being a teenager.
Although he won’t make his decision until after the UEFA Nations League finishes early next week, United can take some solace in the fact that they’ve not spent all summer chasing his signature only to be disappointed at the end of it.
